Oakland Unified School District
Christie Herrera started her career in 2003 as a special education teacher. In 2007 she began working in Oakland Unified School District as an elementary coordinator for programs for exceptional children. At that time she supported students, families and staff in grades pre-K-5. In 2010, she was the founding principal of the Burbank Preschool Center. In this role she supported all preschool special education programs throughout the district. In 2015 she transitioned to the Early Childhood Department as the director. In this role she advocated for high quality education for our youngest learners. Most recently, she has increased her role as the Executive Director of Early Learning, supporting all preschool and transitional kindergarten programs, including the oversight of enrollment, budgeting, staffing, and community-based outreach. Christie leads the department with a deep focus on increasing quality education for all young learners in the district. She believes in creating positive and meaningful inclusion opportunities for all students. Currently Christie co-leads the Oakland Starting Smart and Strong collaborative with a focus on aligning all early learning efforts in the City of Oakland.
The Early Learning program in Oakland Unified strives to build a solid foundation of success for all children and their families. We believe early childhood education is a catalyst to high student achievement. We are committed to providing each child in our program access to a high-quality educational experience. Our promise to provide kindergarten readiness will be accomplished through instruction, assessment and curriculum that is developmentally, culturally, and linguistically appropriate. The curriculum includes instruction in early literacy, math, science, art, physical development, and social/emotional development and is rooted in the California Preschool Learning Foundations.
